- I was born in Arkansas and in 1990 joined the Arkansas Air National Guard as a 40430. That's a Photo Maintenance Apprentice Specialist in Air Force-speak, responsible for repairing photo processors, cameras and other photo-related equipment. I later transferred to the Army National Guard and entered Officer Candidate School. In the National Guard, I held positions as Transportation and Ground Ambulance Company Platoon Leader, Detachment Commander, Aviation Liaison Officer, and Transportation Company Commander. Following Company Command, I transferred to the Army Reserve, served in multiple positions and was twice deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I asked a few times:"Isn't that smoke toxic?" I was trained that in responding to fires, anything that gave off any kind of smoke was toxic...the darker it is the worse it is.
